Weaving

Weaving is a core part of activity here at Succurro: literally, metaphorically, mythologically, ecologically. This act of creating, this way of practicing, is essential to life. Below are a few ways you can be involved with Weaving at Succurro in 2024, led by Isabella Amstrup. You can also follow our Weaving Residents, who will create works here in June as part of Pathways, and will open our season with a trail walk at the Solstice Feast, June 22.

Weaving Club

Weaving Club is an 8-week workshop series in partnership with Bushel Collective, and funded by the Roxbury Arts Group. Participants will be invited to engage in the ancient craft of handweaving as a practice in embodiment — as a way to participate and respond to life, to our environment, to pay attention, engage our senses and connect in community.

We will use the loom, playing with its many forms, as a site of exploration. A site that allows us to consider our relationship to place through the materials we weave that come from the lands we inhabit, to our ancestral lands and textile traditions, as well as to our plant, animal, elemental, and spirit kin that also weave in many forms. It also allows us to consider our relationship to both time and deep-time through rhythm, repetition, pattern, and structure.

Workshops are FREE and will take place every other Saturday from June-September 2024, 2-5pm at Bushel Collective in Delhi, New York. There will be a culminating final exhibition on display from September 27th-30th.

Weaving Independent Study

The independent study offers a focused period of deep immersion into one’s weaving practice. This is intended for weavers with at least a basic foundation of weaving, as well as for more experienced weavers. You will have the opportunity to plan and carry out one or more projects with guided assistance exploring any number of these approaches to weaving - technical, material, conceptual, historical, ancestral, etc.

You will stay in one of our fully equipped private apartments, and be provided a loom, basic weaving tools, and small collection of books. Isabella will provide guidance and help based on your initial consultation to fulfill whatever weaving goals you have for your time.
